Bridging the gap between expert organizations through data-driven collaboration

To ensure efficient and safe minerals processing operations, the mining industry relies on the expertise of skilled operators, reliability engineers and an extended supplier network to understand the nuances of equipment and processes. As sites and regulations become increasingly complex and the pool of experienced professionals grows thinner, operations are searching for new ways to sustain their reliability, productivity and safety.

By turning vast streams of data into actionable insights, digitalization is reshaping the way minerals processing is understood and optimized – and thus driving a more efficient, sustainable future for the industry.

Metso’s Data-driven Performance Services offers solutions for efficient information flow between the customer and Metso to improve reliability and productivity of customer’s assets. These solutions enhance informed decision-making and action-taking on-site by combining data analytics with OEM expertise in the form of remote monitoring and data-driven expert support.

Building blocks for data-driven minerals processing

Data-driven Performance Services start from the ability to measure equipment use and process performance with instrumentation. When the instrumentation is in place, Data-driven Performance Services can be utilized to increase equipment availability and optimize processes.

First, site operations personnel need visibility to equipment and process through data. This is the first step of data-driven processing. Then, they need to stabilize the process with data and automation to enable further optimization.

Data generation and collection enables algorithm development to monitor equipment health and process performance. Metso has developed such algorithms to identify issues and predict failures on connected customer equipment. As an OEM with decades of accumulated know-how in mining equipment and minerals processing, Metso embeds this unique knowledge into algorithm development to increase customer value.

“The starting point of Data-driven Performance Services is the combination of data analytics, artificial intelligence and OEM expertise. This technical baseline built on decades of resolved incidents on Metso equipment enables us to scale our knowledge for a global customer base,” says Matinlauri. “Our predictive analytics for condition monitoring detect equipment-related issues, and through this service, we help customers mitigate issues and prevent failures to improve availability and reliability.”

Global collaboration for local impact

“To provide high-quality service, we bring together data science and equipment expertise,” says Aura Rapatti, Director, Data-driven Performance Services. “Metso’s global expert network is used in both delivery and development of these services. This collaboration makes us more effective in providing meaningful insights and creating value for our customers.”

When an issue is identified through condition monitoring, Metso’s remote monitoring experts from a regional Performance Center start data-driven investigation to prepare an actionable issue resolution plan for the customer. When meaningful, they collaborate with a global Performance Center network as well as Metso’s global Product Technical Support.

“The customer and Metso experts get together and discuss what’s happening on the equipment and how to resolve it in the most optimal way without unnecessary interruptions to production,” says Matinlauri. “The conversation then shifts from assumptions to facts – and that changes everything.”

The customer receives the outcomes of the investigation along with action recommendations. This collaboration leads to tangible outcomes – actions carried out by on-site maintenance crews and field service teams, from inspections to maintenance – which have been proven to increase equipment utilization and throughput in on-going projects.

Partnering for positive change

As the industry continues to evolve, the question is no longer whether data can drive performance, but how effectively it can be used to complement and support people in the operating room and in the field. Metso’s Data-driven Performance Services represent more than just another layer of digitalization in mining: they act as a bridge between mining experts.

“Our customers have highly specialized professionals, and so do we,” says Matinlauri. “The question we address with these services is how to bring these experts together to benefit our customers to the fullest and move the industry forward with efficiency and sustainability.”

Data-driven Performance Services create a fact-based collaboration space to help customers achieve their goals, from improved availability to optimized operations. That’s why, together, we are the partner for positive change.
