Three summers of learning and growth – Emilia’s journey at Metso

Meet Emilia Piispanen, Manufacturing Procurement Summer Trainee at Metso. Emilia is working her third summer in the company and continues to build up her expertise in procurement, logistics, and project coordination. Read how she has grown her skills, and why she keeps coming back.

Hi! I’m Emilia, and I work as a Summer Trainee in Project Procurement team at Metso. I study Business Administration at LUT University, Finland, and I am currently finishing my master’s degree in Supply Management. This is my third summer at Metso. I’ve worked in logistics and procurement before, but this year I have taken on a wider variety of tasks and gotten to see new side of the business in the Project Procurement team.

Each summer has brought me something different. That is one of the things I’ve appreciated most: every year I’ve been welcomed back, trusted with more responsibility, and encouraged to take part in projects that really matter.

Navigating daily tasks and projects

My typical day includes a variety of tasks, such as following order confirmations, handling invoices, placing orders, and joining weekly team meetings. I usually start work quite early, between 6am to 7am, which gives me a good start on the day.

In addition to my daily tasks, I have also been working on a summer project focused on documenting procurement process by purchase categories. It has been a good way to apply what I have learned at university and see how supply chains work in real life.

What keeps me coming back?

I have enjoyed working at Metso, and that is why I have returned every summer. For me, the people are what make the difference. I have always felt heard and trusted, even as a summer trainee. If I have ever asked for more to do or wanted to get involved in something new, I have been encouraged to do so.

My team has been supportive and open, and I have never been afraid to ask questions — in fact, it is encouraged. It has been easy to connect with others across the business as well. I have experienced flexibility and trust, and the work environment is very equal and down-to-earth. I feel you can truly be yourself at Metso.

Even though I’m the only trainee in my current team, I’ve still felt part of a wider community. In my previous roles in logistics, I worked alongside other trainees, and it was great to have that peer support during the summer. You learn a lot just by chatting and sharing experiences with others in the same situation.

What has also struck me is that Metso puts effort into bringing summer trainees together. There have been events and training sessions designed just for us, which have made it easier to understand the business better and connect with professionals across the industry. One highlight for me was a Q&A session with our President and CEO, Sami Takaluoma. It was interesting to hear about his own career path and how he’s grown within the company. It made Metso feel even more approachable and showed that there are many ways to build a career here.

Advice for future trainees

My advice for future trainees is to remember to ask questions, that’s the best way to learn. The more curious you are, the more you’ll understand the bigger picture. And do not hesitate to connect with people. Everyone I’ve met at Metso has been approachable and willing to help. Showing interest and speaking up can take you far!
