Lokotrack® is a leading mobile crusher brand well known for its exceptional, built-to-last design and features. Another, exceptional example of this comes with over 20-year-old Lokotrack® LT110™ jaw crusher, that the Norwegian crushing contractor Tverås Maskin gave a new life through a total overhaul at Metso repair facility.

This sturdy, year model 2005 Lokotrack jaw crusher has broken hard, Norwegian stone about two decades. During this period, approximately 4 million tons of rock have gone through the sturdy Nordberg® C110™ jaw crusher cavity.

The starting point of the overhaul was a well serviced jaw crusher of Tverås Maskin that had processed over the years more than 4 million tons of rock material.

Like most Norwegian crushing contractors, Tverås Maskin has used their LT110 jaw crusher mainly as a stand-alone primary crusher, where feeding is done by an excavator. One of the main locations during this Lokotrack career has been Balhald quarry, Stjørdal, in the vicinity of Trondheim, Central Norway.

Tverås Maskin, one of the leading crushing contractors in Norway, did keep good care of their Lokotrack. All inspections and servicing were carried out in time, backed up by Metso Norway maintenance crew.

In late 2024 the company did face two options: either to buy a new primary crusher or let Metso maintenance specialists to make a complete overhaul at the Tampere repair shop in Finland.

A key subject for overhaul was the sturdy C110 jaw crusher that became good as new.

“We wanted to keep our old, trusted Lokotrack”

“After considering the options available and discussing with Metso Norway and Finland experts, the decision was quite simple – we wanted to keep out old, trusted Lokotrack,” comments Vidar Bjerkås, managing the crushing operations at Tverås Maskin.

“In fact, I believe this old Lokotrack LT110 to be the best jaw crusher that Metso has ever built,” he adds.

“We took care ourselves of refurbishing the feeder section, and Metso Finland repair workshop took care of the thorough overhaul of the rest of Lokotrack.”

According to Vidar Bjerkås, the lifetime of LT110 will be extended by another 10-15 years with the complete overhaul. After the major renovation, the crusher was successfully restarted in August in Balhald quarry. Fed by an excavator, the average capacity is 400 metric tons per hour.

“A good case for total overhaul”

It’s always a matter of discussion whether a 20-year-old crusher is worth overhauling.

To make the decision easier, Metso’s Tampere repair shop experts paid a visit to the Norwegian quarry site to see Lokotrack LT110 jaw crusher in operation.

“After inspecting the unit, the decision was clear. This LT110 has been kept very well-reserved, serviced in timely manner, and clearly a good case for a total overhaul,” says Petteri Piirainen, Metso Repair shop manager.

Early 2025, the Lokotrack was transported from Norway to Metso’s Tampere workshop, housing about 3400 square meters premises, state-of-the art machinery and skilled personnel. The workshop can occupy six Lokotrack crushers for servicing simultaneously.

Late June 2025, the fully overhauled Lokotrack was transported by a truck back to Norway.

Nordberg C110 jaw crusher rebuilt as good as new

After disassembling all Lokotrack parts to achieve a skeleton-looking frame for sandblasting, the main attention was the rebuilding of the robust C110 jaw crusher, the heart of the Lokotrack.

“We rebuilt the jaw crusher by replacing all the necessary worn parts of the jaw like side plates, pitman bearings, clamping bolts, belt guards and other wear parts. During the renovation, we could utilize from the old crusher end plates, pitman and bearing housings that we welded and machined in new condition,” Piirainen comments.

Thanks to the professional work, this over 20-year-old jaw was rebuilt good as a brand new crusher – ready to carry on crushing tasks efficiently and safely.

The rebuild did comprise also renovation of the main electrical switchboard and renewing of all cables. Regarding hydraulics, all hoses were changed, and hydraulic tanks and coolers were washed. The original Cat C12 diesel motor and gearbox were overhauled completely.

New painting for the final touch

As the final touch, the jaw crusher got fresh, original beige paint. Just after midsummer 2025, the new-looking Lokotrack LT110 was transported by truck back to Norway.

“Our repair workshop team was happy for successful completion of the challenging job. Once again, it proved our capability to teamwork with partners and sub suppliers, added with our know-how of overhauls and refurbishing of old parts,” Piirainen notes.

“It shows, how Metso is able to keep the Lokotrack brand heritage alive and meet customer demands even when dealing 20 years old Lokotrack,” he sums up.

From the customer side, Vidar Bjerkås of Tverås Maskin was happy of the outcome of the demanding achievement.

Our co-operation with Metso Norway and Finland worked well. We did receive always the necessary information on how the renovation was proceeding.

“Lokotrack is known of its long lifetime for over 40 years”

“For more than 40 years Lokotrack has always been renowned for its high durability and long lifetime. Still today this remains to be in the very core of our design philosophy. It’s also supporting well our sustainability targets,” comments Jarmo Vuorenpää, Vice president of Metso Track solutions.

“It’s great to see this in practice cases like LT110 Tverås. The best thing is that many of our customers want to keep and maintain their Metso range for decades, so this is more of a rule than an exception. In fact, some Lokotracks built in early 1990’s are still crushing,” Vuorenpää adds.
